CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
This mode of interpreting is used for general business meetings, one-on-one meetings, small informal meetings, most legal and medical proceedings, and social business occasions.
- The interpreter listens to the person who is speaking while taking notes of what is being said.
- The person who is speaking pauses at regular intervals-usually every few sentences-to allow the interpreter to interpret into the target language what has been said up to that point.
- The duration of the event will be longer than an event where simultaneous interpreting is used, since simultaneous interpreting occurs in real time, whereas consecutive interpreting does not.
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
This mode of interpretation is used for small to large multilingual events, such as: meetings and conferences, conventions, summits, board meetings, training sessions, and especially where auditorium or classroom setups are involved.
- The interpreters listen to the person who is speaking and render what the speaker is saying into the target language with only a short time lag.
- Simultaneous interpreting requires specialized interpretation equipment
- Simultaneous interpreting facilitates a more effective use of time than consecutive interpreting, since simultaneous interpreting occurs in real time.
WHISPER INTERPRETING (CHUCHOTAGE)
This mode of interpretation is rarely requested and only works when there is just one participant in a group who requires interpretation.
- The interpreter sits behind the participant and interprets what is being said at the meeting, proceeding or event by whispering into the participant's ear.
